Principal News

From The Principal's Desk

A very warm welcome back to Term 3. I trust that families took the time to relax over the mid-year break. To all the families that have joined us we hope your transition to Point Cook College has been smooth and that your association with the college community is positive.

This Term we welcome Ms Nicole Hovell and Mr Marcus Zannoni who have joined the Year 1/2 Neighbourhood. Furthermore, we welcome back Ms Kristine Lorenc who has been on family leave. Kristine also joins the Year 1/2 Team.

The College has also recently undertaken a recruitment process to select a new Assistant Principal for Year 7-9. A provisional appointment has been made and we look forward to welcoming Mr Nathan Gage to our College in early August.

Seussical the Musical

The College community is very excited about our very first full musical production ‘Seussical Jr’. As Principal I’m proud of the extraordinary effort by staff, parents and students who have committed to ensuring an outstanding performance.

I urge the community to make the effort to support the musical by attending one of the two shows on Thursday the 31st of August and Friday the 1st of September. Great schools are built around community participation. Your children may well be inspired by the possibility of being part of future productions. I can guarantee you will be entertained and leave proud of your school's achievement. I hope to see you there!

Indonesian Speaking Awards

On Friday evening, I was again proud to attend Melbourne University to witness our students receiving significant Indonesian Speaking Awards. I would like to thank Pak Gede for his efforts in preparing students for the competition and subsequent awards ceremony.

Indonesian Competition - State Level Winners from PCC:

  • Level 2 – Selma Ariff Syah - 2nd Place
  • Level 3 - Nicole Huey Sing Lee 3rd place
  • Jason Lim - Highly recommended
  • Y7 - Kimberlyn Witono 3rd place
  • Y8 - Christabelle Ee 3rd place

Enrolments for 2018

Lastly it is that time of year that we begin planning for next year. We ask that you advise us as soon as possible if you intend to leave PCC in 2018. Furthermore, please do not wait to seek enrolment for other children. The more accurate we are in enrolment numbers the better prepared we will be to start the year. Ms Sonia Falcone in the School Administration Team is the best person to contact regarding enrolment inquiries.

Basketball State Team

Lucas Koch (Year 6) has been selected in the School Sport Victoria Team Vic 12 years and under Boys Basketball State Team. He will be competing in the School Sport Australia Pacific School Games Basketball Championship to be held in Adelaide, South Australia from 2 to 8 December 2017.

Lucas competed in a series of competitions to gain selection in the School Sport Victoria State Team. This process began in March and he made the final team of 10.

We congratulate and wish Lucas all the best in the Championship.

Literacy Strategies

As promised recently I will regularly include tips for you to help your children at home.

In this edition, I focus on opportunities to write every day at home. Like reading, writing becomes an everyday activity at home. Let your child see you writing. Try some of these writing ideas at home:

  • 1. Write a shopping list or add items to the list and tick off the items as you buy or unpack them.
  • 2. Keep a board to write and read family messages
  • 3. Give your child a pad of sticky notes to write reminders for themselves
  • 4. Plan and write your weekly menu together
  • 5. Write captions for photographs in your family photo albums
  • 6. Write labels for your child’s art works and creations
  • 7. Make words using magnetic letters and stick them on the fridge
  • 8. Make and write greeting cards, birthday cards, and thank you notes
  • 9. Keep a family calendar on display and write down family events. Talk about upcoming events with your child, for example, where, when, and who will be there

In this edition of People of Point Cook, we meet Annabelle Gornia, our College First Aid Officer.

I hope everyone has a wonderful fortnight.

Woolworths are running the Earn & Learn program again this year. For every $10 spent you will be able to get a token. Tokens can be redeemed for school resources. Point Cook College will be participating in the program.

There will be a collection box in the library where tokens can be posted. We managed to get many fantastic resources for our school from this program last time such as beebots for our coding and a skeleton for the drawing program in art.

If you have any questions please contact the library.

Prep 100 Days of School Celebration

Next week (Tuesday the 1st of August) the Preps will be celebrating 100 Days of School! They are going to do lots of activities based on the number 100. As the Preps have worked so hard we would like to let them have a ‘rest’ by letting them wear their pajamas to school (as will the Prep teachers!). To help support this special day we ask you to:

  • Send your child in comfortable pajamas, with a dressing gown for extra warmth outside and sturdy slippers or shoes (they will still be playing outside, so they need to wear footwear they can play in).
  • Help your child find something to do with the number 100 that they can bring to school - this could be 100 items (small ones e.g. buttons, beads etc.), something with the number 100 on it or even a photo of someone or something that is 100 years old!

Worm Farm

The school now has active worm farms, they may look like normal rubbish bins but they are home to hundreds of worms working hard to break down our left over food scraps, excluding onion and citrus. Feel free to come over to the SAKG garden and take a look, and be inspired to start your own at home.
