Twilight Market

On behalf of the students and staff of PCC, I would like to thank everyone who helped to make our Twilight Market successful!

Due to the weather and predicted storms we needed to move some our stalls and activities indoors but everyone still seemed to have a great time.

We would like to thank the parents and grandparents who assisted on stalls or helped us with setting up or packing up. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Thank you to the PFA parents for helping us to promote our Twilight Market by arranging to display flyers at local businesses and also organising a letterbox drop to houses in our local area.

We would also like to thank the stall holders, community group volunteers and food vendors for being part of our event.

Thank you to the families and members of the Point Cook community who came along to enjoy our Twilight Market!

Subway Lunch Orders

The final Subway lunch for this year will be held on Friday the 15th of December and order forms will be sent home the week before. Please ensure that when you pay for your child’s order through Compass that you also send back the completed order form so that Subway staff know what to make. If your child does not return a form they will not receive a Subway lunch order.

SPACE Tour

Recently we sought Expressions of Interest from our 2018 Year 8/9 families regarding a proposed USA Space Camp Study Tour. Unfortunately we did not receive enough interest to get the tour off the ground for next year so we have put it on the backburner for now. We believe this tour would be an incredible opportunity for our students and will be offering information sessions in 2018 in the hope of relaunching the proposal for 2019/2020. Watch this space for further information next year.

Dental Van Follow ups

Parents who received dental reports offering further treatment are reminded to return consent forms to the office by Monday if they wish to take up the opportunity.

Never Away November

Congratulations to Edwards House who took out the Never Away November Attendance Challenge for the highest rate of attendance this month. These students have won valuable points for their House community which may make all the difference in the final tally for the overall House Community Champion for 2017.

Thank you to all the families who have worked towards improved attendance this year. We will continue to highlight the importance of regular attendance throughout 2018 and will be offering individual support to families of students who have had significant absences this year.

Uniforms

The end of the year is a good time to review your child’s uniform requirements for the upcoming year. If you have items in good condition that you no longer need we would be grateful if you could donate them to our Second Hand Uniform Bank to assist other families who may need to stock up. If you are looking to purchase new items from Noone we encourage you to visit the store now as they will be extremely busy over January. Noone also offer layby services to assist with juggling of expenses at this time of year.

Please note that Year 7-9 students are required to wear the Academic Uniform daily except for PE and Sport Days. If your child has been wearing the sports uniform as their only option for Year 6 you will need to make sure you have purchased the appropriate items to assist them to meet expectations.

Uniform Assistance

Victorian government school Prep and Year 7 students who are CSEF recipients are also eligible for a uniform package through State Schools’ Relief. Applications for the Year 7 CSEF uniform package close on the last day of Term 1, Thursday 29 March 2018. To see if you are eligible for the CSEF payment please read on.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Funding (CSEF)

CSEF funding is provided by the Government to eligible families to assist with the cost of school trips and sporting activities. Families holding a valid means-tested concession card are eligible to apply. A payment of $125 for eligible primary school students and $225 for eligible secondary school students will be paid directly to the school to be used towards camps, sports and excursion costs for the benefit of the student. As of 2018 the requirement for parents to complete and submit a new application form each year has been removed. Parents who received CSEF in 2017 do not need to complete an application form in 2018, providing there has been no change in their family circumstances or change of school. The CSEF program opens for processing in Term one, 2018. Forms will be available via the main office.

Warmer Days

We have had quite a number of extremely hot days recently and it is concerning to see some students still not bringing hats to school, wearing sports jackets all day regardless of the temperature and not drinking enough water, all of which can lead to rapid dehydration. Teachers regularly have conversations with students about these practices and ask that you have similar conversations at home to assist your child in making safe choices.

Hats

Speaking of warmer weather, hat season has well and truly arrived and all students need to be Sunsmart outdoors throughout Term 4, even on cooler days. Please assist your child by providing a College approved hat.

If your child needs a new hat they are available from the main office or Noone Imagewear.


School Wide Positive Behaviour Support

Thank you to everyone who completed the SWPBS ‘How Are We Travelling?’ survey recently. Your feedback has provided valuable insight into practices related to the framework and will help to guide future directions in creating a positive climate for learning. It is reassuring to learn that our parent community supports the philosophy of SWPBS and are keen to work in partnership with us. Feedback received that is not directly related to SWPBS has also been shared with relevant staff.

Communication with parents, developing consistency and assisting students to make connections were all identified as key areas for improvement and some great suggestions of how to achieve this have been provided. We will work towards improvement in these areas throughout 2018.


Dental Check Ups

Dental check ups have been completed this week and reports will be provided to parents within the fortnight. If more intensive dental work is recommended in the report, parents will be invited to have their child attend Semper’s temporary onsite dental van during December.


Never Away November - Attendance

We are now half way through Never Away November, with only 9 more days for students to increase their House Community’s opportunity to not only win the last Attendance Challenge for the Year, but to earn valuable points to go towards the overall winner of the House Community competition for the year.

We may be approaching the end of the year however there are still 25 school days left and every absence is a lost learning opportunity. Now is the time to consolidate and celebrate the learning that has taken place, and perhaps more importantly, prepare for the year ahead. Teachers will be reinforcing the importance of regular school attendance with students right through to the end of the year and we need your support to assist your child to be on board.


Support Agencies

Children and their families often need to access services outside of school to support social, emotional or financial wellbeing and sometimes it is hard to know where to start. If you find yourself in this position and need some assistance please contact our social worker, Abbi Chamberlain, and she will be happy to help.

Stockland Point Cook Shop for Schools Promotion

Thank you to the families who collected receipts from the shops at Stockland Point Cook and either sent them into school or took them directly to a collection point at the Town Centre. We will let you know when we find out how much of the $20,000 we will receive!

SWPBS

As we approach the end of the second year of the SWPBS Framework implementation it’s time to reflect on the success of implementation from a community perspective. All families will receive a link to a Google Form via their COMPASS email, which we encourage parents to complete by Thursday 9th November. Feedback gathered will assist us to plan for further work required in 2018.

Dental Check Up Reminder

Dental Checks ups will begin on Monday 13th November for those families who have signed up. Unfortunately we are unable to tell you exactly which day your child will be seen however younger students will bring home a slip on the day which will indicate that they have been seen. If you would like to be involved forms may still be collected from the office and need to be returned by next Wednesday.

Hats are now uniform

Term 4 meets hats. If your child needs a new hat they are available from the main office or Noone Imagewear.

Dress for the Weather

Uniform combinations have been designed to allow you to cater for the weather on any given day. The following combinations are NOT acceptable;

• Long sleeve tops visible under short sleeve tops or dresses

• Tracksuit pants or tights under dresses

• Black or coloured socks

Please assist your child to meet our SWPBS uniform expectations.

Never Away November

November marks the last month of our House Attendance challenges for the year and it is time for our Middleton students to earn maximum points for ‘Never Away November’ and earn crucial house points leading into the final House Celebration for the year. The pressure is on, will Middleton get their first challenge win or will Edwards, Newton or McNamara double up? We will have to wait and see.

Despite the year’s end being in sight there are still seven weeks to go. Now is not only the time to consolidate and celebrate the learning that has taken place, but perhaps more importantly, get well prepared for the year ahead. Teachers will be reinforcing the importance of regular school attendance with students right through to the end of the year and we need your support to assist students to be on board.

Student Safety – Bike helmets

It is great to see so many students riding or skating to school, however it would be even better to see these students wearing helmets (on their heads, not on handlebars!) as per our SWPBS expected behaviours. Please promote the importance of road safety by ensuring that your child does not leave home without their helmet.


Student Safety – YMCA access

As previously advised the YMCA car park is for YMCA usage only. There have also been concerns raised about students cutting through the car park while making their way home, which can be potentially dangerous. To assist with restricting access, the gate leading to the YMCA adjacent to the bike shed will remain locked unless being used by YMCA staff for collection and drop off of OSHC participants. Please talk to your child about using the correct pathways and gates as a matter of safety.


Hats are now uniform…

Term 4 brings warmer weather and UV rays, which means all students are required to exercise Sunsafe guidelines. All students in Years P-6 are expected to wear Sunsafe, college approved hats when outdoors. Navy bucket hats are available from Noone Imagewear or the College main office. Year 7-9 students should wear either a Sunsafe hat, navy baseball style cap or bring sunscreen to apply as required. Navy baseball can also be purchased from Noone Imagewear.


And speaking of the weather…

With temperatures at this time of year fluctuating from one extreme to the other, parents are reminded to ensure their children are appropriately dressed in college approved uniform combinations. We have deliberately avoided labeling these combinations as Winter or Summer, which allows for selection based on individual needs. Long length items should not be visible under short length items, if layering is required please make sure you select those which can be removed as required. With this in mind, don’t forget to clearly label removable items to ensure those misplaced can be returned to their rightful owners.


Socks – do they really matter…

The short answer is yes! As a general observation, navy, light blue and black are not a good combination. When you cast your eye over most of our students they look really sharp and well presented. Unfortunately when you scan down to the feet and see dark coloured socks, the overall presentation is adversely affected, which is why plain white socks are the colour of choice. They are also quite cost effective as they are readily available at any chain or discount store and even at supermarkets. As a compromise at the request of some of our senior students, we have approved grey socks as an option for anyone wearing either the grey shorts or trousers.

It should also be noted that our senior students should be leading by example in this department and we ask parents to support and encourage them to do so.


Infectious Diseases – please read 

Within our community we have a number of students who are either undergoing or recovering from medical treatment for serious illness. As a consequence of treatment, these students are at significant risk if they come into contact with infectious or communicable diseases, in particular; Chicken Pox, Measles or Mumps.

If your child is suspected of having one of these illnesses it is very important that they not attend school and remain at home until they are no longer contagious.

If your child has, or is suspected of having, one of the above diseases please contact the school immediately. This will allow the College to assess at risk students’ potential contact and exposure to the disease and notify their parents and medical specialists.

As a community we value your support in relation to the wellbeing of all students. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.


Dental Check Ups

Shortly we will sending home information from Semper Dental (previously Future Kids Dental Care), offering dental check ups to all students. This is the same organisation who conducted check ups last year. The check ups will be free for eligible families and $99 for others, which may be claimable via private health insurance.

This year the partnership will extend to conducting educational sessions for students and parents. Semper Dental will be on site from the 13th to the 17th of November.

If you are interested in having your child participate in the program please complete and return the forms to school by Wednesday the 8th of November.

ACD Membership

The Association for Children with a Disability ( ACD) provides information, support and advocacy for families with a child or young adult with a disability or developmental delay. Brochures are available from Robyn Fincher or alternatively go to the website www.acd.org.au for further information. Membership is free if you sign up before the end of October.


Saver Plus Program

Saver Plus is a ten month program that provides financial education, budgeting and savings advice for families. Once you finish the program ANZ will match your savings (up to $500), which goes towards education costs for you or your children.

To be eligible to participate you need to be over 18, have a Centrelink Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card, have some form of regular income and have a child or yourself enrolled in an educational setting. Rollercoaster Grief Support Program

Rollercoaster is a six week grief support program, with separate groups for bereaved children and their parents/carers which provides tailored, specialised support and practical, day to day strategies. The program is targeted at children aged 8-12 and runs on Fridays from 6-7.30pm beginning on the 27th of October at Crookes Counselling and Consulting Services, 7 Princes Hwy, Werribee. Twilight Market


Our Twilight Market will be held on Friday the 17th of November from 3-7pm. The event is a great opportunity for our families and the local community to come together. Our market will include stall holders, community groups, food vendors, Science & Maker Fair and entertainment.

Expressions of interest from community groups are now open! For more information and to request an application form please email market@pcc.vic.edu.au . Please note that our sites for stall holders have sold out and we have also finalised our food vendors!

The Twilight Market is another opportunity for families to be involved and support the College. This year we are running a number of stalls ourselves including a BBQ, drinks, popcorn, fairy floss, snow cones, face painting, coloured hair spray, henna, chocolate toss game, second hand book stall and games area. We will be running a treasure hunt for children where they can go into the draw to win a prize. We have also hired Animals of Oz with some of the money raised from the football special lunch. They will run free shows for families between 3-5pm where you will have the opportunity to learn about and touch Australian animals.

We will be asking for parents to assist in a variety of ways including helping on stalls, promoting the event to the wider community and assisting with setting up and packing up on the day. More information will be sent out shortly about how you can be involved. If you are interested in helping at the Twilight Market you will require a current Working With Children’s Check. If you don’t already have one, please apply at http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/ The WWCC is free! If you would like assistance to apply, please contact me to arrange a suitable time.

To support our drinks stall we are inviting families to donate 600ml bottles of water and cans of soft drink from the Coke range. We are also asking for donations of blocks and bars of chocolate and bags of lollies for the chocolate toss game. If you are able to donate items please leave them at the office or your child’s homeroom.

We are looking forward to a great event!


Stockland Point Cook Shop for Schools Promotion

We have joined the Shop for Schools promotion at Stockland Point Cook (the Town Centre) where we can win a share of $20,000!

If you are shopping at the centre from Monday the 18th of September to Tuesday the 31st of October please save your receipts. The dollar value on the receipts will be converted to points for our College. The school who collects the most points, wins the largest share but each school will get some of the money.

Your receipts can be placed in an envelope which is available from the Customer Care desk opposite Prouds in the Target mall or at the entry boxes around the centre. You just need to put your receipts inside and place a tick next to Point Cook College on the envelope. We also have an envelope in each homeroom where students can bring in receipts on behalf of their family. If you would prefer to have your own envelope you can collect one from our office.

Thank you to the parents and grandparents who were able to help with our football special lunch on the last day of Term 3. We made over 700 lunches on the day and the feedback from students was very positive!

Some of the profit from the lunch will be used to hire Animals of Oz for our Twilight Market! They will run free shows for families between 3-5pm where you will have the opportunity to learn about and touch Australian animals.

Planned Roadworks on Boardwalk Blvd

We have been contacted by the Wyndham Council so that we can inform our families about the planned roadworks along Boardwalk Boulevard between Sneydes Road and Dunnings Road. We have be told that there will always be one lane open on each side of Boardwalk Blvd to allow for traffic to get through but there will be detours in place to turn right into side streets. The roadworks may impact families travelling to and from the College so you may like to consider this when planning which way you will drive. The roadworks will be completed in sections with the construction at our end of Boardwalk Blvd due to commence in early November. The whole project should be completed by early December.

WRITE AWAY

The Point Cook P-9 College Writing competition

Do you have a great idea for a story?

Have you dreamt of getting your ideas out there?

Do you love writing?

Then this could be for you!

Point Cook P-9 College is pleased to hold our first whole school writing competition- 

Write Away

Write Away is about encouraging a love of reading and writing and to inspire children to commit their thoughts and ideas to paper. Every child has a story and every story is worth telling.

At Point Cook College we aim to encourage and foster special interests and talents across the whole school. We now have an opportunity to showcase the writing talents and creativity of our student community. Selected submissions could be published in the College newsletter and be collated into a published book.

Write Away is open to all interested Point Cook P-9 College students with a passion for writing.

The writing piece must reference “Point Cook” in some form.

During week 1 and 2 of the term there will be some fantastic writing workshops so keep an eye out for this information.

In weeks 3 and 4 sessions will be available for students to work on their submissions during break times.

The competition opens on Monday 23rd of October and Entries close at 4pm on Wednesday the 8th of November 2017.

Entries need to be submitted with a completed entry form by the closing date. Download the entry form here.

Football Day - Parents and Friends Association (PFA)

On Friday the 22nd of September we will be having a Football themed out of uniform day. Students are encouraged to wear the colours of their favourite football team and bring a gold coin donation to support State Schools Relief who assist families in need with uniforms, shoes and stationery for their children.

As part of the day, the PFA will be organising the special lunches that students have already ordered. Please note that orders have now closed. We are looking for extra helpers to assist us on the day as we have over 800 lunches to prepare! If you have a Working with Children Check and you are available at any time between 9am-2pm please let me know. As we will be using a number of ovens, the kitchen will not be safe for younger children to come with their parents who are helping.
