English as an Additional Language (EAL)

English as an Additional Language

One of the programs available at our College is our English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program. Students who speak a main language other than English at home may qualify to receive additional support.

The EAL Program supports students who are at various stages of their English language development. The EAL Program focusses on developing students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills using a variety of strategies. Students who receive additional support through the program, work in a small group with an EAL teacher each week. The EAL program offers a variety of classes to cater for students who are in the beginning stages of learning English through to supporting students who have been learning English for some time. Students are placed into the EAL classes that best cater for their individual needs.

Benefits of the PCC program

  • At PCC, we are able to offer a variety of EAL programs to cater for the needs of our students. Not all schools offer these programs.
  • Students receive additional, specialist support which benefits their learning.
  • Homeroom teachers support the decision for their students to participate in the program.
  • The program links in with the homeroom English, Inquiry and Humanities topics to support student learning and understanding of the topics.
  • Participation in the program and receiving an EAL report does not affect student entry into Secondary School or University programs.

The EAL teachers strive to provide a safe, supportive learning environment which allows students to feel comfortable to participate in all activities. Through the use of whole group, small group and independent tasks, students are supported in developing their English skills especially in the areas of oral language development and vocabulary knowledge.
