Changes to Digital Device Use from 2027
From 2027, the Victorian Government is introducing changes to the use of digital devices for students in primary schools. Under the new guidelines, schools:
- will no longer invite families to purchase or bring their own digital devices for students in Prep to Year 6
- will follow recommended digital device usage times, including minimal device use in Prep to Year 2, and a maximum of 90 minutes per day for students in Years 3 to 6.
These changes are designed to reduce cost-of-living pressures for families while supporting student wellbeing through reduced screen time. What This Means for Point Cook College
As a Prep to Year 9 school, Point Cook College is updating its digital learning program to align with the Victorian Government’s requirements while continuing to provide students with the digital skills they need for future learning.
Prep to Year 6
From 2027:
- families will no longer be required to purchase or provide a device for students in Prep to Year 6
- the College will provide access to school-owned digital devices to support learning when required
- classroom programs will align with the Department’s recommended digital device usage times
- students will continue to develop essential digital literacy and technology skills through planned and purposeful learning experiences.
Years 7 to 9
Students in Years 7 to 9 will continue to participate in the College’s Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program.
The BYOD program supports students to:
- access digital learning resources both at school and at home
- develop the digital skills required for secondary education and future pathways
- collaborate, create and engage with learning in a connected environment
- take increasing responsibility for managing their learning tools and resources.
The College will continue to review its Year 7 to 9 digital learning model to ensure it meets Department requirements and supports effective teaching and learning.
Reasonable Adjustments
Students with disability who use a digital device as part of a reasonable adjustment or personalised learning support plan are exempt from these changes and will continue to have access to the technology they require to support their learning. [www2.educa…vic.gov.au]
